Stage 1 — Fertilization

Stage 1

The zygote — day one

Fertilization is the starting line: a sperm and egg unite into a single cell called the zygote. That cell holds the full genetic blueprint for a new individual.

Over the next days, the zygote divides rapidly while moving toward the uterus. This very early window is sometimes described as the germinal period (roughly the first two weeks after fertilization).

Stage 2

Blastocyst — first specialization

By about five days, dividing cells form a blastocyst: a hollow ball on the order of ~100 cells. Two parts matter for what comes next:

Implantation in the uterine wall follows; the inner cell mass is where organ formation will later unfold.

Stage 3

Embryonic weeks 3–8 — germ layers

The embryonic stage (often described as weeks 3–8 after fertilization) is when the body plan takes shape. The embryo develops three germ layers (ectoderm, mesoderm, endoderm) that will give rise to every tissue and organ.

During this window, organ systems begin to form in a coordinated sequence — not everything at once.

Stage 4

First organ system: heart & circulation

Major references describe the cardiovascular system as the first functional organ system to develop. A simple heart tube appears around the third to fourth week after fertilization; rhythmic contraction and fluid movement often fall around the fifth week (exact dates vary by source).

Embryonic growth outpaces passive diffusion alone. Circulation delivers nutrients and supports other tissues as they form — a reason circulation leads the pack.
Stage 5

Neural tube — brain and spinal cord

Alongside early heart development, the neural tube forms (typically emphasized around the third week). It folds and closes into the precursor of the brain and spinal cord.

So “what is first?” depends on definition: the first cell is the zygote; the first major working organ system is often cited as the heart and vessels; the nervous system scaffold begins in the same early embryonic window.

Stage 6

A surprising detail: deuterostomes

Humans are deuterostomes. In this group, the first opening of the early gut tube becomes the anus; the mouth forms later at the opposite end. It is a developmental biology fact that often surprises non-specialists.

Summary ladder: zygote → blastocyst (specialized layers) → germ layers → early heart and vessels → neural tube → ongoing organogenesis across the first trimester and beyond.
